Welcome

On the Quay Since the 1700s

Sitting right on the waterfront in Wivenhoe, the Rose & Crown has been part of village life for over 250 years. Our Grade II listed building looks out across the River Colne towards Rowhedge — and our quayside tables are one of the best spots in Essex to watch the world drift by. We serve proper pub food, well-kept cask ales, and a warm welcome to locals, walkers, and visitors alike. Whether you're stopping in after a riverside stroll or settling in for a long Sunday lunch, there's always a seat and a pint waiting.

Two Hundred and Fifty Years on the Colne

Follow the river through our story

Pre-1760The First Timbers Rise

The Rose & Crown is built on part of the garden of Garrison House in Wivenhoe, overlooking the River Colne. The exact date of construction is unknown, but the building predates 1760.

1769Solomon Lappage, Licensee

Solomon Lappage serves as licensee — the earliest recorded landlord of the Rose & Crown.

1782Smack Races on the Colne

The pub becomes the official registration place for boats entering the River Colne fishing smack races, a role it holds until 1793.

1832Auctions & Seafaring

The Rose & Crown hosts the bankruptcy sale of Wivenhoe boat builder Philip Sainty — his shipyard, workshops, boathouse, and three Bath Street properties. Many landlords of this era were seafaring men themselves: sail makers, ship's masters, and yacht stewards.

1861The Gardner Family

James and Jane Gardner take over as landlords, beginning what would become the longest-serving tenure in the pub's history — a remarkable 38 years until 1899.

1920Colchester Brewing Company

The pub is sold to the Colchester Brewing Company, and five years later to Ind Coope, who supply beer from their Romford brewery.

1973Grade II Listed

The Rose & Crown is granted Grade II listed building status on 1 June, recognising its heritage and architectural value as one of Wivenhoe's oldest buildings.

TodayA Wivenhoe Landmark

Reopened under new management in 2026, the Rose & Crown continues as a beloved riverside local with tables overlooking the Colne towards Rowhedge — still pouring pints after more than 250 years.

★★★★★
“Beautiful spot right on the quay. We sat outside watching the boats and had a lovely lunch. The fish and chips were excellent and the staff were really friendly.
